The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,

"A person who teaches others while neglecting his own soul is like an oil lamp, which illimates others while burning itself out."

  1. Salams,
    I couldn't understand this one.

What does the word 'ignoring' imply here? Is this a reference to being negligent to one's own self? Or is this a description of forsaking one's own self for the good of others?

More hard it got to grasp when kept in company of the following one:
" The true lover finds the light only if, like a candle, he be with own fuel, consuming himself. "

    I'll be obliged for help.

  2. walikum Asalam,

wel the true knowledge actually leads human to Peace and path of light, but if man only teach it to others and not take it to practice to himself then it burns himself up also give others what is not sufficient for them.

the knowledge which is not practiced make you heretic or otherway won't provide you any benefit of it.

2nd line that you quoted is about love, love only spreads when you burn yourself in it, the light of love spreads only this way.

Guess so , there's huge difference in knowledge and love.

    Jazak Allah

you are right, these are two different things. the anomaly of a burning, self-consuming torch probably stirred the flap...
